Well, my chapter of life at Hawaii Animation Studios has closed. I am now yet again standing in that artistic fork in the road, where I wonder where will I end up next? I have now been animating for about 10 years, and the cocky side of me thinks it should be easy by now to just walk into the next gig. But that is not the case, There are many that do what I do, and do it better, the fight to be seen as an artist is one I fear I will always be fighting. Get better! Work harder! Learn new software! Fight Fight Fight! And why I am certain this fight is in me, I also have this scary feeling of just leveling out as an artist, reaching a point where there is no more growth. Which to me is a fucking nightmare because I have so many high hopes of where all this is going to lead. All the packing up, and moving from city to city, resetting my life over and over. Something big needs to happen! I also get scared because even though I know I have fight left in me to reach my goals, I also have thoughts of living deep in the woods where nobody can find me, and just create art and get out of the hustle lol. I gave up a long time ago trying to plan what was to come next in my life as an artist/animator. Instead, I welcome the unknown, I look forward to the possibility of a great new opportunity! This will be my last month in Hawaii, it has been a great year and a half, I never expected to be here. Where will I go next?...

First Tattoo!

To mark the event of my unemployment, on my final week of work, I went to get my very first tattoo. It is of an animation disc, with the word, dream under it. It is to remind me, why I have moved from state to state, packing up one life to start a completely new one somewhere else. It is a reminder of the dream, the dream to become great at what I do, and to never stop chasing my dreams.

But I did see that one of the game cinematic we worked on was leaked and I thought I would share it here,it truly was a shame that this game didn't get done. So this was our first two big projects here at Hawaii animation studios! And it was a total blast! I had so much fun working with the team! On a personal note I have worked for years trying to work with a team to finish a project and to see my name in the credits with all the others who put in so much hard work to get it done. It feels great to see that Don Dixon name slowly float up into the endless abyss of wherever movie credits go! :) I look forward to the many upcoming things to work on, and I still will strive to go bigger and better each time! WHOOOO HOOO!

Really proud of this one, I learned alot thanks to the people I work with, especially my animation supervisor T Dan Hofstedt! I still geek out knowing that a dude that animated on some of my favorite disney movies of all time, gives me advice on how to be a better animator! This was done before I got out here to Hawaii, needed some extra dough and did this one for FYI magazine in dubai. What made this so much fun to work on is that I was seriously stressing out at the time, I had finally landed a job but now came the long road of figuring out how I was going to break my lease, get my dog into hawaii with all the quarantine laws, and figure out how my gf was going to be able to go and transfer schools, and also how to afford to move all my stuff with no money. :) So I was stressed but then I got this little gig and it took my mind off of everything. My first pass at what the client wanted did'nt hit the mark I was bummed, but then I busted out this one and they loved it, it really just made me feel good to just be stress free and to also please a client at the same time.

Sketch Club!!

My dopetastic animation supervisor T-Dan Hofstedt rounded up the gang and work and formed a sketch club. We get together and push the pencils every friday, and we pick one mark at the end of it and try and do a memory sketch of that person. So the days are counting down until I make the big move to Hawaii, I still have to find a apartment for me and my girl, I am so nervous about my poor dog doing his 120 days in quarantine, and most importantly I am scared as hell that I am gonna suckkkk at the new job! lol I am still amazed that I got it, and so excited and happy about it, but also very very scared, I just hope I have what it takes and I don't let anyone down. In an attempt to not get rusty, I took a break from packing and planning the move and worked on this months 11 second club clip. Its about 2 days of work total, it was fun and I hope people dig it.

So since sept it has been one of the hardest times in my life, I found myself put in a situation that I thought I could not dig myself out of. The only thing I could do since sept was work! Re work and then re work it again, looking at the shots of my demo reel, really taking a hard look at it, and tweaking and asking people's opinion of how it could be better. I had alot of ups and downs and leads that turned flat, and finally landed a gig, with what seems to be a great team of people that I look so forward to working with and learing from. But the hard parts not over, lol now comes trying to pack up one life to start a new one, and this is proving to be yet another one of my greatest challenges in life. :) Things are a bit different now because I am in love and have a gf, and we also have my lil dog sketch, so planning this move is driving me a bit nuts, I thought by now we would have those Star Trek Teleporters! With money tight and time not on my side its going to take some creative thinking, but dammit I am doing it! In the packing process I ran across some old drawings and sketches and work from when I worked on some men in black casino game stuff, so in an attempt to calm my nerves and stress, I scanned a few and am posting them. I can't wait to see what kind of things in Hawaii inspire me to do. As with any job but especially this one, I hope to not let them down in their decision to make me apart of the team. This is prob the one of the things that stayed with me the most in art history, was Bernini's statue of david. Ok for one the pose is just dope. The pose for me represents The pose I think we all hold in life, the pose of struggle, the pose of determination. The pose that goes up against "The Man" and says Fuck you, I don't care how big you are and how small I am I will face you head on! This is my pose, the pose i hold in life.It also is proof positive that in animation one good pose can say more to a viewer, then a 100 bad ones.

Kung Foo Awesomeness!

I recently went to the movies and saw Kung Foo Panda, and damn was it good! The story was great, the characters all stayed true to who they were, the jokes all fit the film and wasnt just pop culture references. It was fantastic, one of the great challenges I have been faced with at work is animating a large creature that has weight and power and still able to be somewhat dexterious. To see this panda with its fluid movements with flawless weight shifts and wonderful timing, I was inspired and jealous at the same time LOL yea I can admit it I get jealous! I left the movie feeling happy and yet again reminded as to why I wanted to become an animator, watching people laugh and react to the animation and the characters was such a treat for me. My hat goes off to all who worked on the film and specifically the animators! I will continue to strive for something as great! GO see the movie! :)

Ok so its not a drawing but I promise to get some new sketches up soon, I have been so busy with getting settled in here in florida, and making new friends, learning how to animate using motion builder, which rocks btw! I really wish I could show some of the stuff I am working on, its very exciting and fun, And the models I am working on look so kick ass, not to mention the great rigs, I have never worked on such cool looking characters and its such a blast bringing these guys to life and animating them doing cool shit. I guess you will all see them when we finish our game. I am learning that life is about progression,not being afraid to try and go somplace new. I love the town here, Dallas was not the place for me, and this just confirms it being here, I have met some great people, I love coming into work everyday.And you can feel comfortable being yourself and speaking your mind without people bending out of shape. I look forward to showing off some new personal animation as well as some new sketches. Be back soon!

But I really always liked the design of this character and the shapes I used on it seem really fun. A buddy of mine use to always tease me when I drew creatures because I would pose them as if they were super models, and I think this is one of them. Today I accepted an offer to work as a character animator for game play and cinematics for Ignition Entertainment out in Gainesville Florida. I am really excited to begin work there, very nervous and hope that I do not let them down. There is a lot of talent in this studio which can be very scary! But I am gonna give it my all. I would say I am gonna miss Texas, but that just would'nt be true. LOL

I always speak of my dad's influence on my becoming an aritst, and I realized that I never give props to my moms. Never has there been a womans' bold presence of guidance and support, then what I got and still get from my mom. To be an artist, and to be an animator, I think you have to really know how to see people, and how to sympathize and empathize with their emotions and ideas. My mother is a queen of this. Never once did she stop me from trying to become and artist, and when I ever fell, and still do, she brings me up, and reminds me that everything I got in me, my will and determination to be stronger with each day, came from her. Creativity I may have gotten from my pops, but love and respect for the thngs I do and create, is all about moms.

Imagine being 5 years old and watching your dad and his twin brother in the garage building a 7 foot tall robot surrounded by electronics and weird gadgets all made by your dad, Thats what Zapp and Roger take me back too, every weekend I would watch my father make robots jamming out to Zapp and Roger and the Jackson 5 and Earth Wind and Fire, it was good times, and when I hear this song it takes me back to those times when Imagination and fun was always around, I would see my dad create something from his head, and thought how awesome it was, and with the music it just added and extra flavor and excitment that to this day I take with me, So thats why I have Zapp and Roger playing on my blog! :)
